Blood Brothers
Blood Bothers is one of the longest running West End shows and has entertained audiences since 1983. It was first written as a play for a school production but Willy Russell, the writer, adapted it into a musical and it opened in the Liverpool Playhouse in 1983. However, the show did not experience massive success at this point and only generated smaller audiences. At this point the shows producer, Bill Kenwright, sought to redevelop the show and generate a greater interest in the production.
The musical was launched on the West End in 1988 and became an overnight hit. It has continued to entertain audiences since it was re-launched and has gone on to experience the same success on Broadway.
The story centres on the lives of two brothers who grew up in different families without knowing they were related. Their childhood friendship drifted as their lives took separate paths. One brother was kept by his struggling single mother whereas the other was integrated into a wealthy middle class family that allowed him to experience a life his mother could never have given him.
The musical tells the story backwards and rewinds into their childhood from the initial chilling scene of two stretchers carrying bodies away. The musicals success over the past twenty years on the West End proves that this show is not to be missed.
