A musical concerning the plight of famous American author Ernest Hemingway will be making its way to the Comedy Theatre in July.

The new show, for which there is yet to be an announcement concerning casting and creative talents, will be making its way to the London venue for its world premiere from 24th July 2009, where it will continue to September.~

So far only two names are attached to the project, both related to the musical design of the show; the music is by John Robinson, with Libretto by Roberto Trippini. The pair are also responsible for the lyrics of the production.

Ernest Hemingway was of course an author and Nobel Prize winner who started his career at the humble age of seventeen, working inside a newspaper office. He went on to serve in the First World War and then became a member of expatriate Americans based on Paris. It was following this time that he wrote his famous works “The Sun Also Rises” (1926), which dealt with his time in Paris, as well as “A Farewell To Arms (1929), concerning disillusionment of an ambulance worker in the war. His other words include “For Whom The Bell Tolls” (1940), concerning the civil war in Spain, “The Old Man and the Sea” (1952), the story of a fisherman and a collection of short stories he produced in the middle of his career, including “The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories (1938) and “Men Without Women” (1927).

“Too Close To The Sun” focuses on Hemingway in old age in the time leading up until his death in 1961. His younger secretary provides great comfort to him during these latter years, but this secretary wants more than to help the man. His wife, up to now putting up with their relationship, could be under threat as she aims to become his new wife so that she might inherit the estate. Things are not helped when an old school friend arrives in the form of Rex, who has his own agenda concerning the life of Hemingway and what unfolds is a game of lies and manipulation.

“Too Close To The Sun” is at the Comedy Theatre from Friday 24th July 2009 (previews from Thursday 16th July 2009) to Saturday 5th September 2009.
